Overview: domestic glycol consumption status and market analysis

introduction: ethylene glycol (ETH, also known as ethylene glycol and ethylene glycol for short because of the intensity of the characteristic spectral line emitted by each element), is a colorless, clear and viscous liquid with the molecular formula of C2H6O2, the molecular weight of 62.07, the freezing point of -11.5 ℃, the boiling point of 197.6 ℃, the relative density of 1.1135 (20/4 ℃), and the refractive index of 1.43063; Soluble in water, lower alcohols, glycerol, acetone, acetic acid, pyridine, aldehydes, slightly soluble in ether, almost insoluble in benzene, carbon disulfide, chloroform and carbon tetrachloride. Ethylene glycol is an important basic organic raw material for petrochemical industry. It is mainly used in the production of polyester fiber, antifreeze, unsaturated polyester resin, lubricant, plasticizer, non-ionic surfactant and explosives. In addition, it can also be used in coating, photographic developer, brake fluid, ink and other industries, as the solvent and medium of ammonium perborate, as well as the production of special solvent ethylene glycol ether. It is widely used

I. current situation of domestic production and consumption and market analysis

1 Production status

the industrial production of ethylene glycol in China began in the 1960s. At the beginning, the traditional chloroethanol hydrolysis method was used, that is, chloroethanol reacted with alkali to produce ethylene oxide, and then ethylene oxide was hydrolyzed to produce ethylene glycol. This method is not suitable for large-scale production because of its high energy consumption, poor product purity, high production cost, serious pollution and backward technology. After the 1970s, with the rise of China's petrochemical industry, the production of ethylene glycol in China has developed rapidly. Shanghai Petrochemical Company, Jilin Chemical Industry Co., Ltd., Xinjiang Dushanzi petrochemical plant, Yangzi Petrochemical Company and Beijing Dongfang Chemical Plant have successively introduced the pure oxygen oxidation production technology of SD Company of the United States to build ethylene glycol production units; Maoming Petrochemical Company, Tianjin United Chemical Co., Ltd. and Fushun Petrochemical Company have successively introduced the pure oxygen oxidation production technology of shell chemical company of the United States to build ethylene glycol production units. At present, there are 10 sets of ethylene glycol production units in China, with a total production capacity of 1.078 million T/A. the manufacturers are mainly distributed in Sinopec and PetroChina. Among them, Sinopec has 6 manufacturers, with a total production capacity of 749000 T/A, accounting for 69.5% of the total production capacity of ethylene glycol in China; PetroChina has four manufacturers with a total production capacity of 329000 T/A, accounting for about 30.5% of the total domestic production capacity. The 262000 T/a ethylene glycol production unit of Yangzi Petrochemical Company is the largest ethylene glycol production unit in China at present, and its production capacity accounts for about 24.3% of the total domestic production capacity; The second is the 225000 t/a production unit of Shanghai Petrochemical Company, with the production capacity accounting for about 20.9% of the total domestic production capacity. Then there is the 159000 t/a production plant of Jilin chemical industry company, whose production capacity accounts for about 14.7% of the total production capacity. See Table 1 for the main producers of ethylene glycol in China in 2004. It is estimated that the production capacity of ethylene glycol in China will reach about 2.4 million tons in 2005, which will alleviate the contradiction between supply and demand of ethylene glycol in China to a certain extent

with the continuous increase of ethylene glycol production capacity in China, the output is also increasing. In 1990, the output of ethylene glycol in China was only 284200 tons, which increased to 456100 tons in 1995. The average annual growth rate of output during the Eighth Five Year Plan period was 9.9%. In 2000, the output reached 907500 tons, and the average annual growth rate of output during the Ninth Five Year Plan period was as high as 14.8%. The output of ethylene glycol in China in 2002 was 906100 tons, an increase of 12.2% over 2001. The average annual growth rate of output from 1997 to 2002 was 5.1%. In 2003, the output of ethylene glycol in China reached 969300 tons, an increase of 7.06% over the same period in 2002. Among them, the output of ethylene glycol of Shanghai Petrochemical Company reached 193400 tons, accounting for about 19.95% of the total output of ethylene glycol in China, ranking first in China; Followed by Yangzi Petrochemical Company and Jilin Petrochemical Company, the output reached 180200 tons and 171100 tons respectively, accounting for 18.59% and 17.65% of the total domestic ethylene glycol output, respectively, ranking second and third in China. 2. Import and export situation although the production capacity and output of ethylene glycol in China have increased rapidly, due to the strong consumption of polyester and other industries, it still can not meet the growing consumption in the domestic market. A large number of imports are required every year, and the import volume is increasing year by year. According to customs statistics, the import volume of ethylene glycol in China was only 205400 tons in 1995, exceeded 1million tons in 2000, reaching 1049700 tons, and further increased to 2145700 tons in 2002, accounting for 71.1% of the total domestic consumption. In 2003, the import volume of ethylene glycol in China reached 2.2789 million tons, an increase of 17.3% over 2002

in recent years, the consumption of ethylene glycol in China has been increasing. In 1990, the apparent consumption of ethylene glycol in China was only 315500 tons, which increased to 656800 tons in 1995. The average annual growth rate of apparent consumption from 1990 to 1995 was 15.8%; In 2000, the apparent consumption of ethylene glycol in China reached 1957100 tons, and the average annual growth rate of apparent consumption from 1995 to 2000 was as high as 24.40%; In 2002, the apparent consumption exceeded 3million tons, reaching 3.0199 million tons, becoming the world's largest ethylene glycol consumption country, surpassing the United States. In 2003, the apparent consumption further increased to 3.462 million tons, an increase of about 14.64% over 2002. See Table 2 for the supply and demand of ethylene glycol in China in recent years

at present, Ethylene glycol in China is mainly used to produce polyester, antifreeze, etc. the consumption structure in 2003 is: 83.8% is used to produce polyester products, 16.2% is used to produce antifreeze and other products

in recent years, the production of PET polyester (including polyester fiber, polyester resin and film) in China has developed rapidly. In 2000, the production capacity was only about 5.95 million T/A, increased to about 11.02 million T/A in 2002, and reached about 14.5 million T/A in 2003. The main manufacturers are Jiangsu Yizheng Chemical Fiber Co., Ltd. (the production capacity is 1.08 million T/a), Zhejiang Far East Chemical Fiber Group Co., Ltd. (the production capacity is 400000 T/a) Liaoyang Petrochemical Fiber Company (with a production capacity of 387000 T/a), Shanghai Petrochemical Co., Ltd. (with a production capacity of 365000 T/a), Zhejiang Hengyi Group Co., Ltd. (with a production capacity of 350000 T/a), Xiamen Xianglu Textile Fiber Co., Ltd. (with a production capacity of 320000 T/a), Guangdong Kaiping Polyester Enterprise Group Co., Ltd. (with a production capacity of 300000 t/a), Jinan Zhenghao chemical fiber new material Co., Ltd. (with a production capacity of 260000 T/a) Tianjin Petrochemical Company (with a production capacity of 200000 t/a) and Luoyang Petrochemical Company (with a production capacity of 200000 t/a), etc. In 2003, the output of PET polyester products in China was about 8.5 million tons, and the total consumption of ethylene glycol was about 2.9 million tons, accounting for 83.8% of the total domestic consumption of ethylene glycol. It is estimated that by 2005, the production capacity of PET polyester in China will reach 16 million T/A and the output will reach 12.8 million T. at that time, the consumption of ethylene glycol will reach about 4.35 million T. In 2003, the consumption of ethylene glycol in antifreeze and other aspects (including the production of glyoxal, acetic acid, alkyd resin, dioxane, 1,3-dioxane, polyethylene glycol, unsaturated polyester, etc.) was about 562000 tons. It is expected that the consumption will reach about 650000 tons in 2005. It can be seen that the total consumption of ethylene glycol in China was about 3.462 million tons in 2003 and will reach about 5 million tons in 2005

II. Development suggestions

(1) at present, the total production capacity of ethylene glycol in the world is about 15.862 million t/a, and the consumption is about 14.2 million T/A. It is estimated that by 2007, the total production capacity of ethylene glycol in the world will exceed 22.5 million T/A, and the consumption will reach about 16.16 million T. at that time, the production capacity will be surplus, and the market competition will be more intense

(2) at present, the production capacity of ethylene glycol in China is about 1.078 million T/A. in 2003, the output was about 969300 T, and the consumption was about 3.462 million T. The production was insufficient, and the import volume reached 2.516 million T. about 83.8% of the products were used to produce polyester products, and 16.2% were used to produce antifreeze and other products. With the continuous development of polyester industry in China, the consumption of ethylene glycol will continue to increase. It is estimated that the consumption of ethylene glycol in China will reach about 5 million tons by 2005, and there will still be a gap of about 2.6 million tons to be solved by import. Therefore, ethylene glycol will still have a good development prospect in China

(3) on the whole, the world's ethylene glycol production capacity has shown a surplus trend, while the consumption in Asia, especially China, is increasing, which is bound to lead to more foreign products flowing into China, posing a certain threat to the future development of China's ethylene glycol industry. At present, China's ethylene glycol production capacity is small, the output is small, the device scale is small, the technology is relatively backward, the production cost is high, the economic benefit is poor, and it is lack of competitiveness in the domestic and foreign markets. Therefore, we should actively adopt advanced technology to expand the production scale of the device, so as to reduce the production cost, improve the output and quality, and enhance the competitiveness of China's ethylene glycol in the domestic and foreign markets. In addition, we can also consider introducing the latest foreign production technology and building several large-scale ethylene glycol production units with a production scale of more than 300000 t/A, so as to fundamentally solve the contradiction between the supply and demand of ethylene glycol in China

(4) when the production process reaches 280billion yuan by 2020, ethylene oxide catalytic water method can greatly reduce the water ratio, save energy consumption and reduce the generation cost; The ethylene carbonate method can make full use of the CO2 resources of ethylene oxidation by-product. In the existing ethylene oxide production unit, only the reaction steps for the production of ethylene carbonate can be added to produce two widely used chemical products, vinyl carbonate and dimethyl carbonate, which represent the production of ethylene glycol in the future
